Two Flats on Clifton Street
2019: Old Red Lion, The Etcetera
On a street in Cardiff, in one little terraced house split in half, two people lead solitary lives. ‘Two flats on Clifton Street’ tells the story of Agnes and Eira, living side by side, divided only by the ceiling between them. With just the audience to talk to, they share their stories, their wants for the future and their nostalgia for the past.
This is the second play written by Faebian Averies, following her first play, ‘Detention’ which achieved a 5* review on its opening night and went on to have a sell-out run. ‘Two Flats on Clifton Street’ was showcased in March at the Chippy Lane Productions ‘Who Run The World?’ event, at the Old Red Lion Theatre, which championed new Welsh female playwrights.

"Ed Hartland has managed to inject an interesting twist on one of the most popular plays in theatre. The contemporary elements that have been included aid the moral decline of the central character with ease and his use of the space masterfully maintains a narrative that is dark and verges of the grotesque...one has to take a leap of faith as they grab hold of the boundaries and personally push them resulting in something so effective and evil it leaves one slightly shaken."

"Intelligent juxtaposition" [British Theatre Guide]
"The direction of the second play by Ed Hartland is interestingly visual and makes good use of the space and the many uses of entrances and exits that the script provides" [The Public Reviews]
"The design was well detailed [...] inventive entrances and exits [...] playing off the sounds of the other room further allowing you to believe you were in a hotel" [Theatrefullstop]
"Both plays are wonderful masterclasses in suspense, building up tension to breaking point and leaving you on Hitchcockian tenterhooks" [Litro Magazine]
"interesting light, energetic staging and striking performances" [London City Nights]

"The Thirty-Nine steps is lovingly pastiched" [Stage Review]
"Laugh out loud humour...This type of chaotic performance brings with it the risk of becoming messy or difficult to follow but Hartland’s skilled direction ensures that the audience is never left confused...very visually funny...a creative and entertaining take on a classic genre."
